5th New York Volunteer Infantry Gates (1906)

The 5th New York Volunteer Infantry gates at Manassas National Battlefield Park were erected as a part of a large monument group dedicated to the New York regiments in the Second Battle of Manassas. The iron gates were originally installed on October 20, 1906, but have been moved to accommodate the widening of Lee Highway (Route 29). Environmental conditions and vehicle impact had resulted in significant deterioration.

In the fall of 2008, Kreilick Conservation began working with a team of companies to conserve and protect the deteriorating gates. Since lead paint was a concern, abatement occurred on site before dismantling the decorative pieces. The detachable elements were removed for cleaning and repairs. Broken and missing parts were recast and reforged. Once the repairs were finished, all parts and both posts were thermally sprayed (metalized) with zinc using an electric arc sprayer. The individual elements were spray primed and painted, then reassembled with stainless steel fasteners. Removable braces were installed to prevent the gates from swinging freely.
