Crosses

The Masonry Restoration Group retained Kreilick Conservation, LLC for the conservation of nine crosses adorning the roof of the Our Lady of Angels Convent in Aston, PA. The crosses varied in size, metal, and condition. Damage was present before treatment, including open seams, holes, and areas of rust. Also, one of the smaller crosses was missing an arm. Previous repairs were visible and all prior surface treatments had deteriorated.

The conservation treatment included the cleaning, repair, and gilding of the crosses. All pieces were removed from their permanent locations and treated off-site at the Kreilick Conservation facility. All existing surface coatings were first removed and repairs to the metal were completed. This included the addition of a new arm for the one that was missing. After the mechanical repairs were completed, yellow primer coats were applied. Once these were thoroughly dry, Rolco slow-set size was applied to the surface. Once the size reached the proper tack, 23.75 KT Italian gold leaf was applied using a gilding tip. The surface was later burnished to remove any air pockets, lines and excess material. After the conservation treatment was complete the crosses were returned to their positions on the building.
