Milord la Chamarre (1973-74)

Created in 1973-74 by Jean Dubuffet, a French painter, sculpture, collector, printmaker, and writer, Milord la Chamarre is a stainless steel sculpture, often referred to as the “Mummer.” The structure is composed of individual pieces welded or screwed together. Each piece is abstract in shape and form and is painted black around the edges and intermittently to contour the face and folds in the garment. The sculpture stands on a black polished granite base, which itself stands on a stainless steel column. The polished granite also extends behind the sculpture, on the exterior wall of the Center Square Complex.

The conservation treatment began with the removal of bird droppings from the interior and exterior of the sculpture. Then the entire sculpture, including the granite base, was washed with a non-ionic detergent, clean water, and non-metallic bristle brushes.
