Morgan Library Metal Restoration
The Morgan Library & Museum at 225 Madison Avenue at East 36th Street in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan was designed by Charles McKim of the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White. Founded in 1906, it housed the private library of J.P. Morgan. The building was designated a New York City landmark and a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Kreilick Conservation, LLC was retained by Sciame Construction, LLC in February 2019 to provide metal restoration services as a part of their team for the exterior restoration of the McKim building.
Kreilick’s scope of work included: deinstallation, conservation and repair, and reinstallation of the bronze fence sections and the entry gate on the south side of the building; in-situ conservation and repair of the fence sections on the east side; and in-situ conservation of window grills. The bronze surfaces were cleaned, patinated and waxed. Treatment methods were modified for objects treated in-situ to protect the adjacent masonry, wood, glass and other original, extant materials. In addition, Kreilick conserved and re-wired the large pendant lantern at the main entrance. As of March 2020, the majority of the project was completed, with the exception of reinstallation of a few of the south side fence panels and gates, which will be completed when public health concerns permit.
